I Love...

Has it really been more than a year since I last blogged?! I guess I believe it considering the circumstances. Many blessings have come our way recently. I figured what better than to start over (again) with all the things that I LOVE (forgive me as I adjust back to blogging. I need to get back into the groove and adjust my settings, background, add pictures, etc...I digress).

In no particular order...

I love that the sun is dancing through my blinds as I type. Beautiful weather has been long awaited. I love that there is not a cloud in the sky. Perfectly clear, perfectly blue.

I love hearing the squeals and laughter of my little "son"-shine as he decides which drawer to open, which chair to climb, and which item to stick in his mouth. I love counting his little fingers, and his little toes knowing that every inch of him has some part of me. I love his almond shaped eyes and his one-toothed grin. I love the two cow-licks in the back of his hair about as much as I love the swoop of hair over his forehead (I like to think of it as one day being Justin Bieber hair). I love to ponder the future and imagine what kind of man he will grow up to be. I love the way he holds his arms out towards me when he wants to be held. I love when I hold him how he sweetly nestles his head in the most perfect position so I can smell the sweetness of his skin and kiss his forehead and whisper in his ear just how much I love him. I love to lay next to him as he sleeps (and dreams of eating ice-cream with Papaw and Nana, and Skyping with Auntie BecBec). I love to wake up in the morning hearing the babbles and coos on the monitor as he plays in his crib. I love to get lost in the moments only wishing for more hours to spend with him. My love for Ty is perfectly endless.

I love him as a best friend, husband, and father. I love his devotion. I love his spontaneity. I love the welcome home hug and kiss no matter what time of day or mood. I love his smile from ear to ear and how infectious his laugh is. I love that I have to remind him that he must wear brown shoes with a brown belt, not black. I love that he wears sandals year around. I love his Eskimo kisses. I love his amazingly tender touch. I love that he wants to hold hands and hug really tight. I love his intelligence, but more so his wittiness. I love our inside jokes that would only make sense to the two of us. I love his determination and will to complete any and all tasks presented before him. I love that he is solid, grounded, and firm. I love him as my soulmate. I love his romantic ways (can't give away all the secrets). I love his desire and ability to be a perfect man. My love for Chris is perfectly matched.

I love flip flops. I love sun tan lines. I love my friends. I love my family. I love my job and the lives that have touched me. I love french vanilla frozen yogurt topped with hot fudge (and maybe a few sprinkles). I love texting. I love getting snail mail just because. I love pedicures. I love grilling on the back porch with a sweet adult beverage in hand. I love to get lost in crime novels. I love curling up on the couch for an afternoon nap. I love shopping. I love scrapbooking. I love learning new things. I love haircuts. I love blogging (now, if I could only find extra time in the day).

There are so many things that I love, I don't think I could possibly begin to name them all. Knowing how much I love makes me realize I have just as much love to give and so much to be thankful for!

Surprise!

Yesterday was Hubby's 30th birthday (wow)!! What a milestone! He will swear to you that he feels better at 30 than he did at 25 (so, it's true, you do get better with age)! Honestly, we didn't do much yesterday because we celebrated over the weekend. Here's what we did (I would recommend to ANYONE):

Hubby had been on my case for months about having a "get-together-cookout-kinda-thing" for his birthday (in other words, I do the planning, he just shows up). What he DID NOT know, I had already planned a surprise birthday party for him at the house. For those of you who know me, know that I cannot keep an exciting secret to myself (if it has anything to do with surprises, I just wanna share). For ONCE, I actually kept him the dark (complete dark)! Over the course of the last month, I had been making arrangements for a personal chef to come to our house and prepare a meal for ourselves and our close friends. The chef needed to come to the house, so I had a last minute plan of getting Hubby out of the house by having our good friends call to say they needed help with a door?! The issue with the door was truly benign, but it got Hubby out of the house for about an hour. The chef showed up, toured our kitchen (all several hundred square feet of it), memorized the layout of the baking items, pots/pans, utensils, etc (again, a small collection),we chose a menu and she was on her merry way (it was extremely rushed because I did not know how long it would take to "fix the door").

During the weeks that passed, I decided to purchase a new grill for Hubby. He continuously alluded to how much he would llloooovvvveeee to have a NEW grill (same grill, only bigger...typical man, right?). I was shopping (for someone else's birthday gift) at Target when I came across all of the CLEARANCED outdoor items (I love a sale, even better when it's clearanced)! I saw the BIGGER Weber grill Hubby was so adamantly wanting! BUT, in my mind, I remembered that Lowe's does price matching (It was about time I could use the price match idea; we spent half of our savings there during the first year we lived in our house doing fixer-upper kinds of things and never once found a price matching deal). So, I immediately (without purchasing the other birthday gift...oopps) left Target and travelled to Lowe's. Of course, when I asked for a price match they had to call Target for verification. And once it was verified the manager had to come do an override for the price (it is somewhat of a hassle, but TOTALLY worth the savings). My savings:

The Weber grill at Lowe's $89.70

The Weber grill at Target $62.99

The Weber grill price difference $26.71

The Weber grill price difference + price matching made the grill cost: $56.68 (I am always looking for a great deal, I believe I found me one)!!

Because I got such a great deal on the grill, I bought a cover and some new grilling utensils and the cost was still less than the price at Lowe's. Now, to hide the grill from Hubby. I just called my wonderful neighbor (and friend) and she gladly (at least it seemed so) accepted the proposition.

Hubby insistently (like a child) brought up the "get-together-cookout" and how I needed to get a plan going. So, unfortunately, the surprise did not last until the day of the party. I ran out of creative ways to surprise him as guests arrived. Thursday, the day before the party I left the invitation for the party out for him to look at. Also, I told him that the neighbors sprung a leak (her Hubby was gone, and it had been raining, it was the best I could do). He went over and found all of his new grilling contraptions! YYYEEESSS, I succeeded, I surprised him BIG TIME!! He had no idea (although he will swear he knew "something was up"...that's just hindsight though)!

Friday was the PARTAY! We had a great time with our friends! The food that the personal chef prepared was EXCELLENT. We had for appetizers: prepare your own sushi, salmon wrapped in asparagus, and bread with goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes. We had a superb salad with a homeade raspberry vinaigrette. Yum! For the main course we had sauteed (not sure what the saute was, but nonetheless great) carrots and snow peas. Rice pilaf with mushrooms. Beef or chicken puff pastry. And MY FAVORITE (dessert, of course)---creme brulee with roasted berries!! My taste buds were definitely having a party in my mouth!

My compliments to the chef--she cooked a fantastic dinner, AAANNDDD cleaned up after herself, and put all of the leftovers in the fridge. I had absolutely NO clean up whatsoever! Meanwhile, we played the game Loaded Questions with our friends! It was sooo much fun! I think (and hope) a GREAT time was had by ALL (especially HUBBY)!

Tell us about yourself and your family....

I currently live with my parents while I'm building a geodesic dome on property in back of theirs with my significant other Adam. I'm an only child, thankfully. I have 3 rescued cats ( Emma & Bri & Gracie who Adam claims is his cat) and a little Chihuahua/Terrier Mix named Leo. They are my children and I treat them as such (spoil them rotten).

How did your shop come to be?

I heard about Etsy when it first started on crafters.org. I joined and listed a few things. There wasn't much action on Etsy at the time and I had been selling handmade clothing on eBay. I sold 1 or 2 things and then kinda forgot about it for a while. Then eBay got worse an worse and I started hearing more about Etsy. I had a lot of jewelry findings, started listing them and they sold. From there I went on to making and selling jewelry and some sewn items.

Favorite thing about having an Etsy shop?

I think my favorite thing about Etsy is all of the friends that I have made. For the most part there is no competition even between people who sell close to the same kinds of things. Everything you make is unique so therefore there's no competition, which is nice. Plus it feels like a real physical shop.

How did you come up with the name Smiling Frog?

The name came from Adam. I love frogs and one late winter day I was telling him I saw the first frog of the year sitting on a sunny rock near the pond. He said "What kind of face did he make?" and I did my best frog smile imitation. So after that he always asks me on a sunny day "What kind of face did the frogs make today?". Yes, we're weird, yes we talk to animals and insects a lot. :) I'm an only child, that's my excuse. I make my own fun and talk to myself.

If you could go anywhere right now, where would you go?

Hmmn, I've been thinking I want to go to Canada, which isn't too far from Maine. It just seems like a friendly place with lots of neat shops.

What are your hobbies/and what do you do in your spare time?

I have a very hard time separating hobbies from work. Pretty much making things is my hobby and I get to sell them. My other job is gardening, which is also a hobby. Other than that I try to spend a few hours with friends a week. I do spend way too much time on facebook, I have to admit.

Are you involved with any organizations/volunteer work?

I try to give donations to animal rescue groups and canine cancer groups when I can. My last dog, Gunny, died of cancer after a 7 month battle.

What is your favorite food and drink?

Favorite food, if you call it that, chocolate.

Favorite drink, soda, probably Mountain Dew. Really I try to healthy but those are my weaknesses.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully in my house. It has been sort of a nightmare building a geodesic dome and has taken way longer than expected. Other than that I hope my Etsy business picks up even more so it can fully support me through the long Maine winter.

What inspires you?

All the artists of Etsy inspire me and amaze me. Nature inspires me. When I am gardening I have time to daydream about things I could possibly make.

The most daring thing you have done?

That's a hard one. I don't think I can think of anything. I've done more stupid things than daring. Although I am deathly afraid of heights and when we were building the shell of the dome I had to bring plywood up and down a 30 foot extension ladder tied to a scaffolding and it shook all the way. I would be in tears by the time I got to the top, but I did it. Not bad for someone who once got stuck on top of a 10 foot greenhouse and had to be carried down a ladder over someone's shoulder.

What is upcoming for Smiling Frog?

I am hoping this winter to have a line of clothing and to have some sterling silver jewelry. I have a jeweler's torch that I must learn to use. Plus I really want to get back to my seamstress roots, which is what I started out as.

Fall Fun!

Okay, so I first want to apologize... I know that I have been slacKING! (BIG TIME)!! I only wish for more hours in the day (don't we all?!). I have been busy, busy, busy working (I'm working tonight, too) and by the time I come home, I am completely exhausted. So, I have vowed (to myself) that I will (try) to update the blog more often! Fair enough? =)

As most of you know, FALL is my favorite time of the year for many reasons!! The weather has been superb here (minus the rain)! I am completely excited! I can finally get out to my flower bed, walk the dogs, sit on the porch knowing that I will not be in sweltering heat! In order to prepare for the fall season, my good friend (and neighbor) and I decided to be crafty!! I love being crafty without a plan! All we decided was that we were going to make wreaths for our front door. Off to Michael's we went for a little shopping spree. I think I could spend ALL day there just coming up with creative and fun projects. I definitely bought waaaayy to many items for one project! This is such an easy project---all it requires is a little time, a grapevine wreath, ribbon, and flowers (maybe a few accenting pieces). This is what we made:

I, on the other hand, have not put my wreath on the front door yet (I need to--it's on my "to do" list for today)!

Slap 'em Silly!

In the midst of waking up this morning, I heard my Hubby laughing (it was more like a giggle). I need a few moments to actually "wake" up in the morning, so the laughter just passed me by. I did the usual (pee, brush my teeth, etc) and walked down the stairs expecting something funny. Boy, was I in for a treat.
Hubby was sitting at the table reading the newspaper. The newspaper around our area can be best described by Forrest Gump's box of chocolates--you never know what you're gonna get. Hubby was NOT actually laughing or giggling, just a you're-such-an-idiot-I-am-disgusted chuckle at what was in the paper. The article: Stranger Slaps Crying Toddler. WHAT?!
A brief synopsis of the article--an older guy (I don't even want to call him a "gentleman", "man" because it just does not seem to fit) hit a 2 year old girl at least 4 times for crying in Wal-Mart. The guy was charged with a felony of cruelty to children. WOW! I am appalled at him.
I am curious as to how this man mustered up the ability to HIT someone else's child in a PUBLIC place?! Boy, would I love to slap him silly! And I would like to give him a little bit of advice: If you don't like screaming kids, then you probably shouldn't go to Wal-Mart. Or better yet, if you cannot control your emotional outrages, then you may want to consider becoming a hermit.
Can you believe this guy?!

On a lighter note, the weather is absolutely beautiful today! I have ALL the windows open with a slight breeze coming in...AMAZING! Makes for a good afternoon nap (I'm only preparing myself for working the next 3 days)!! Ohh FALL, how I love thee! We're gearing up for college football season (Gooo Dawgs!! and Mountainers!!). Our anniversary! Shopping for ALL of the new fall looks (I have got my eye on many items---handbags, jewelry, shoes, clothes, scarves, etc)! And OF COURSE, fall foods (chicken and dumplings are my fav...my mouth is already salivating)!

Tasty Tuesday!

For those of you that know me laugh when I say that I am cooking dinner (perhaps it truly is comical that my Hubby makes ME dinner just about every day). Let me explain just a little further for those of you that don't know me (I feel that I need to clarify myself to keep from being presumed as "bad wife")... I can be a Betty Crocker allllll day long. You want cheesecake? I have this really fantastic Oreo cheesecake recipe that will knock your socks off (I break out the springform pans and all). Having a bad day? This Betty will bake you up a batch of my grandmother's famous peanut butter cookies that will turn any frown upside down. BUT...when it comes to dinner, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will suggest a frozen pizza, cereal, or just say "somethin' easy." I remember one particular newlywed moment (some 4 years ago). I thought I was going to be THE BEST WIFE EVER and make homemade chili (Hubby's favorite) for dinner. I was even economical/nutritious and bought the dried beans instead of canned. Uhhhmmm....BAD IDEA. The beans stayed white?! I cannot even begin to explain how that happened since chili is red-ish! Needless to say, we ordered a pizza that night. Poor Hubby!

So, my "somethin' easy" for dinner tonight was awesome!! It is actually a recipe that one of my best friend's used to make when we were poor(er) college students. I wanted to pass along to those of you who are like me (aka lacking kitchen coordination and technique), or those that are running around constantly and need something simple, cheap, and mindless (hmm...sounds like me, too) to make for dinner!

Poppyseed Chicken

(4-6 servings)

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds of chicken
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
1 cup of sour cream
1 sleeve of Ritz-like crackers
2 Tablespoons of butter
4 teaspoons of poppyseeds

There are less than 10 steps to preparing/serving poppyseed chicken:

1. Cook chicken as you normally would (I boil mine)

2. Put chicken in a 9 x 13 pan (cut up into small pieces)

3. Mix sour cream and cream of mushroom soup in separate bowl

4. Pour over chicken

5. Mash crackers, spread on top of chicken/sour cream/cream of mushroom mixture

6. Drizzle melted butter over top

7. Sprinkle poppy seeds over that

8. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until crackers start to brown

Hubby was so excited, I didn't even get a chance to take a "pretty-out-of-the-oven" picture!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when dinner is a success!!!

-The mommy necklaces have been the most popular this year and the most fun to make!!

Any future plans for Lauren Nicole Gifts?
-I want to keep adding more jewelry. When my Husband retires from the Army we will start working together and he likes working with silver and other metals, but isn't so crazy about sewing.

What do you do in your spare time?
-I have two favorite things that I do in my spare time. One is to go dirtbike riding with my husband. The second one is to sit down with some coffee and read through all the jewelry & bead magazines I subscribe to.

Any heroes?
-I really admire women like Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey. I am always amazed at how strong certain women are and what an inspiration they are to everyone.

Favorite place to vacation?
-Ouray, Colorado (also the same place we would love to live someday)

Latest book you have read (and liked)?
-"Something Borrowed" by Emily Griffin

And just for fun...what did you have for breakfast?
-I wish I could say I had Wheaties, but I was really bad and I made pancakes this morning.

How did you start out blogging?
-We move alot and I wanted a way to keep in touch with everyone. I decided to do a combined personal & business blog because I knew I couldn't keep up with both. It has been an amazing way to meet new friends and keep up with everyone.

Any advice for up and coming bloggers?
-I think that if you want a great way to keep up with family and friends, a blog would be really fun for you. I wasn't sure at first if I would like it or not, but with everyone's crazy schedule we have all actually kept in better touch through blogging and Facebook. I even found some friends from 3rd grade that I haven't heard from in over 20 years. You also get to meet some really great bloggers.

Happy Hubby

Ladies, you have to hear me out through this post...I know EXACTLY how to make your man happy!

I actually worked with a hammer today (regretfully, I don't have any pictures to prove it). I know, I know, you're thinking about my motto--I'm the project manager, not the worker. Again, hear me out...

Hubby decided that we HAD to re-do the garage. The only time I spend in the garage is getting out of the car and walking inside, I failed to notice that it needed an overhaul. Ever since Hubby has started woodworking (the first project was the dresser/changing table ((picture attached)) him and one of his best buds built for the soon to arrive twins) , he has become uncontrollable about starting new projects. Don't get me wrong, I love that he has a hobby (it allows me more shopping time when he is working on his projects)! The number of projects is what is getting out of control! He wants to build a bookcase, a new scrapbooking/project desk for me (I cannot complain), entertainment center, and NOW--the garage.

Today Hubby decided that he wanted to get started tearing down the garage. We had a work-bench and shelves already, I could not understand why he wanted to tear down something that was perfectly functional. I was thinking he wanted to do something organizational (he will tell you that I am the queen of organization). I was absolutely WRONG! So, he drew out blueprints for me and showed me some pictures from his woodworking magazines. I was quite impressed (he never ceases to amaze me--that is why I love him)! I am actually looking forward to this new garage project (oh my! when he reads this, he is going to say "I told you so")! Of course, I made some project manager requests (more like demands)---He (somehow I think I will get suckered into this) will be re-painting the garage before any new work bench or shelves are made.

In order to help him get through the demolition (that's the best part) stage, I decided I would help him out by pulling nails out of the old 2 x 4s that he may re-use. WOW! What a blast! I had fun hammering and pulling nails out of the wood (I can't believe I am saying this). Ask me about it tomorrow and I may not tell you the same story--I'm probably going to be sore because I do not think that I have ever hammered before in my life.

The most fulfilling part of the day was all the compliments he was giving me. I think I received more compliments hammering than if I was prancing around the house in some sexy, Vicky's secret lingerie. So, I guess I've figured out another mystery to the male species, ladies! Proverb of the day: Have hammer in hand, Hubby will be happy!

Questionable E's!

This morning I woke up excited! Why? you may ask...Finally, I am able to get back into my workout routine (it is truly not that exciting)! For those of you that know me know that just a few weeks ago I had a rigorous (I can't believe I was doing it) workout schedule for the entire week. I am working towards my goal of completing a half marathon! Now that I have started working full-time, I don't quite have as much time to spare (y'all can relate, right?). So, it's been a few (or more) weeks since I last got a really good, sweaty workout in. This morning's plan consisted of going to run 3 miles and then, go to spin class.
WELL, on my way to the gym I got a phone call. "Hey, Jen we're going out to lunch today, hope that you can come along." My dilemma--to EXERCISE or to EAT?!
You better believe at the next light, I made a left U-turn to go back home and change clothes so I could go to lunch with the ladies. No hesitation whatsoever. Yep, that's right. I would rather eat (and socialize with some of the most fantastic ladies in this universe) a pizza roll (probably 2000ish calories) than go to burn close to 1000 calories at the gym. Let me just tell you about this 2000 calorie pizza roll...The pizza roll-AMAZINGLY SUPERB-filled with tons of cheese, garlic, onions and pepperoni. Exactly how I like it! My taste buds were practically having an orgasm (do I have to explain any further?)!
So when I got home from lunch, Hubby (who also got to eat a pizza roll I brought home for him) asked if I wanted to go to the gym. I reluctantly agreed to go (only after I got a 2 hour nap in). Do I regret eating that 2000 calorie pizza roll? Simple answer-YES! I was having reflux (aka burping) the entire time I was running.
Since the day is coming to a close I have to admit-I am still excited for the day!! It was a fabulous day because I got the best of both worlds. I got to go eat with some of my favorite ladies AND I got to exercise with the love of my life. Mission accomplished!!
My lesson of the day---learning to maintain a reasonable balance between the things that I love---friends, family, eating, and exercising!!
Now I am off for dessert! ;)

Princess Ellie

Ellie does not quite have an adoption story like Murray! She has plenty of stories to share since we have had her though! Just as the last post, this post is dedicated to my furry family!

This is her story: Once we bought our house, Hubby and I decided (mostly I) we could look for a new dog/puppy. I started researching dog breeds--I've only met a handful of weimi's in my life. All the ones that I have met were gorgeous with their big floppy ears, and blue/green/yellow eyes. I knew that I would rather rescue a dog rather than pay a breeder loads of money. I had to convince Hubby how wonderful it would be to have a weimi. And so I must have accomplished the task because Hubby, myself, and Murray loaded up the car and drove to a town right outside of D.C. We brought Murray along to pick out his new sister. It's not very often that rescue shelters get puppies, but we certainly lucked out. She was precious, wearing a tiny purple collar, 8 weeks old, Murray could not stop sniffing her. She's the one! I should have known what a handful she was going to be--she tried to bite my fingers the entire trip home.

Once we were home, it took several months to get her adjusted to our daily routine! In the beginning she was not potty trained, she chewed everything her puppy teeth could get a hold of, she whimpered the entire time she was in her crate, she did not sleep through the night (is this what having an infant is like?!). I could not leave her in her crate. Look at those beautiful blue eyes. Her eyes and expressions are very convincing, and that is why she has become known as the princess.

As time has passed she has grown into her body (I still do not think she realizes how big she is now that she is 2). She is the absolute picture of a weimaraner! She is rambunctious, yet amazingly loyal. She is loving, daring, hyper, cuddly, warm, fuzzy, cute, smart, etc., etc. We have our days when she regresses back to her puppy ways. I can only imagine how many things that she has ruined. What is for certain though is that she is our princess, and does a fantastic job of acting the part!

Likes: long walks, chasing ducks/geese, treats, being curled up on the couch, annoying Murray, riding in the car with her head hanging out of the sunroof, scraps, chew bones, tug-o-war, getting her ears rubbed, demolishing any toy that claims to be unbreakable, amongst a million other things...

Dislikes: When the door bell rings, getting her nails clipped, being without Murray.

There you have it--our two pups! They are such great companions! I would recommend to anyone who does not have a dog and wants one, GET ONE! =)

Meet Murray

This post is dedicated to introducing you to one of the loves of my life! I am an animal lover, particularly dogs. If I could, I would have many more dogs living in my house. Unfortunately, Hubby would not approve. Which reminds me, that is exactly how Murray came to be a part of our family. The moment I laid eyes on Murray, my heart was captured. I absolutely HAD to have HIM.
This is his story: Hubby and I went to the mall where the SPCA was sponsoring an adoption drive. I secretly didn't tell him why I wanted to go to the mall. I am a girly girl, I love to shop, I did not need any other reason to drag (literally) him to the mall. Once we arrived, we conveniently entered the doors where the adoption drive was placed. I must admit, I was (still am) pretty sneaky. =) There he was...quietly sitting in his cage while all of the other dogs yapped as people passed by "oohh-ing" and "aahh-ing" over the animals. As we perused through the aisles, I kept looking at Murray. Once we came to him Hubby put his hand in his cage. Murray then proceeded to put his paw in Hubby's hand. That was it...My heart melted instantly! I decided right then and there I was not leaving until I left with Murray. As mentioned before, I am stubborn. I sat in the floor, crossed my arms, and I had no intentions of getting up. After a stern talking to, I left without Murray. It only took about a week before I decided I HAD to have HIM. It was only a matter of keeping a secret, filling out paperwork, and finding enough money to pay for him (after all, I was a poor college student). Finally, I was getting exactly what I wanted! To my surprise Hubby was not mad because he knew I was going to do it (so he says). And as all dreams that come true, it's been a happily ever after for our family!!

Ladies (& Gents) I am excited to introduce you to Murray:

He is a 5 year old Boxer/Hound Mix!

Likes: Long car rides, cuddling, squirrel/rabbit/stick chasing, swimming, treats, dog parks, lazing in the sun, hearing motorcycles, sniffing every inch of any outdoor area, giving "high five", extra long walks, lifting his leg to pee, being petted on his belly, giving kisses, getting leftovers that fall to the floor, being called "Mur-Mur", going to the beach, sniffing guys/gals rear ends, laying on fresh laundry just out of the dryer, mixing wet food with dry food, amongst a million other things...

Dislikes: Thunder/lightning, musk rats, & vacuums.

And that is why I love him! There is something about my furry friend that makes me smile at the beginning, middle, and end of each day. Won't you agree that there is something about a dog's love that is extraordinary!? Stay tuned to meet the rest of the family!

This One is For YOU, Kristen!

Several nights ago I got together with some fantastic nursing school friends for dinner and drinks. And no matter how hard we try not to talk about it, nursing inevitably enters our conversation. You know, as nurses we sit around the dinner table and talk about anything and everything vulgar. Frankly, some of the stories we share might make others vomit in their mouth. Oh, NO, not us nurses! We will talk about anything, anytime, anywhere! =) As expected, during dinner our conversation drifted towards nursing. This particular conversation is one that I don't mind posting...For those with a weak stomach--you CAN continue reading.

Two of my girlfriends work in two different ER's. You can imagine the stories they have to to share! Generally speaking, the ER performs many pregnancy tests. Seriously? Why go to the ER to get a pregnancy test!?! I can guarantee that it's the most expensive pregnancy test out there! I suggested why don't people go to the health department, or buy the $7 store name brand package with 2 pregnancy tests?! My friend, Kristen had an even better idea. The DOLLAR STORE has pregnancy tests! That totally took me by surprise! I was shocked to find out, I had no idea. Not that I didn't believe Kristen, but I just had to see this for myself.

The next day, I found myself really wanting to scope out the pregnancy tests at the Dollar Store. I just had to investigate further. So, I drove to the Dollar Store. I walked up and down every aisle--they have everything you could possibly want for any occasion. The noteworthy items--glycerin suppositories (for those with constipation--if you look at the pics hard enough you will see that the glycerin suppositories were placed right next to the pregnancy tests), Christmas wreaths with plastic red peppers glued to them (for those who get started early on their Christmas shopping), and wedding cake toppers (wow-I should have taken a picture of that). Attached you will see that the Dollar Store offers two choices for home pregnancy tests (sorry for the un-clearness, I took the pics with my phone).

So, that's it! Ladies and Gents, the deal of the day (everyday): a pregnancy test for exactly $1! Perhaps we are on a road to keeping those who ONLY need pregnancy tests out of the ER (and driving up healthcare costs, and spending taxpayers dollars). After all, everyone can scrounge up enough change for a $1, right?!

I LOVE Being A Nurse!

So, I worked last night. During the wee hours of the morning (in between all of the alarms sounding), I found myself deep in thought about this whole nursing career I have got myself into. I took a journey through all of my memories as a student nurse and now as a RN (real nurse). Although, I am certainly in my "infancy" in the nursing world, I could not imagine myself in any other place. For the longest time I have placed my love for nursing on to other things. I have been saying I love nursing because...the unit I am on, the hours I work, the children I see, etc, etc. And suddenly, I realized--IT'S NOT THEM, IT'S ME! I am a woman of deep compassion. I AM the reason why I love nursing! Nursing school provided me with the knowledge base and the beginning skill set, BUT there is sooo much more to nursing. And that "more to nursing" is ME! There is something to be said about the harmony that nurse's provide with their selflessness, uniqueness, empathy, kindness, compassion, motivation, determination, support, awareness (on, and on, and on). I am by no means claiming to be an exemplary nurse. However, I have promised myself (and now all of you) that I will continuously strive to be. I just LOVE being a nurse!
With the philosophical part of me done (it doesn't happen too often)... I am moving on to a lighter subject! I absolutely couldn't wait to get off work! On my way home, I picked up my bags from Whitney Caroline Design. Truth be told, the best part of my day was picking up these monogrammed totes! I have already transferred all of my nursing gear to my bag! I love, love, love it!! Adorable, light, and sassy! I can't wait to go back to work! As I march or rather, hike from the parking garage (seems like 5 miles uphill in a snowstorm), I will get to show off my new bag! I think Whitney was pleasantly surprised at how well the bags turned out too! She even blogged about them! Please take a look and enjoy!!

Introduction to Blogging!

Hey, everyone!! First time blogger, absolutely no experience, looking for any commentary or instructions on how to be a super blogger! As I become more proficient, I intend on adding things like giveaways and such! I look forward to this new learning experience....

So, I've been debating for the last few weeks what I would blog about on my first blog. I think I am just going to play it safe and introduce myself to the readers. I am looking to gain readership. My blogs will be based on the input I get from my stalkers, I mean readers! =)
The story of my life follows... My name is Jennifer, but you can call me Jen. All my life I've been called Jen, but I pretty much answer to anything because Jennifer is such a common name. You've probably guessed (based on my name) that I am a product of the 80's. I was born in Florida, but raised in Georgia. I always have and will consider Georgia "my home." I grew up in a small town with my mom, dad, younger sister and miscellaneous pets. My parents have worked hard their entire lives and so you can imagine, those characteristics are the foundation of my being. My mom will tell you that I am as hard headed as a mule, just like my father. But, I will tell you that I am (at least try to be) as tendered hearted and loving, just like my mom. It is the greatest compliment in the world for someone to tell me that I remind them of my mom. To keep you from boredom...I will skip over all of my childhood and bring you closer to date.
Once I graduated highschool, I decided I wanted to try something different. And by different, it meant that I moved away from home to a college only a few hours away. I always found myself travelling back home during the weekend. I decided right away that I wanted to be a nurse and declared that as my major. There was no rhyme or reason for choosing nursing, truthfully. During the whole transition of leaving the nest, I found myself searching and continously learning to define myself. My love for scrapbooking and all things sassy started to evolve (the sorority life had a hand in that). I also found myself falling in love with a boy. I will save our amazing engagement story for another blog (I have to keep you coming back, don't I?!).
Long story short, my Hubby (who I will refer to as such) made the decision that I would move to Virginia so that we could be closer before we were married. I switched Nursing School's in the process, and prolonged my graduation date. And over the past (almost) 4 years, we have lived happily ever after. Maybe not Cinderella style, but nonetheless, happy. We have spent the last 3 years working on a "fixer-upper" house that we bought. I will blog about all of the fantastic transformations too! I have FINALLY graduated nursing school. I have found my niche in the pediatric setting! I love my job and couldn't imagine being anywhere else. I absolutely adore my little family...me (RNJen), Hubby, and our two pups. You will get to meet the dogs shortly. Now, I've told you a little about me...I would love to hear about you!
I am using this blog to keep in touch and stay up to date with old friends, kinda friends, and new friends! I would love you to join and follow along on this path....my journey through life. Stay tuned for more posts and eventually giveaways!
